All website owners have at least one thing in common; they want higher search engine rankings. The best way to obtain those rankings is to get other websites to link to yours. Here’s how.
1. Writing to other website owners to request links on their sites. It’s a lot of work, but it can help raise your search engine rankings measurably, especially if you can get links on subject-related, high ranking sites.
2. Submitting sites to directories can be very productive. A listing in DMOZ or the Yahoo Directory can trigger dramatic results. Listings in other high Google PR directories like the-big-brain, will also produce the desired result.
3. Article writing: like requesting links, article writing is a lot of work, but it is well worth it. By writing articles and submitting them to article directory sites, one article (with links to your website in the article box) may wind up on thousands of websites.
4. Distributing news releases (which include your website URL) is a little known but effective way to obtain links as a well written release may appear on hundreds of websites. Website owners can create releases or pay a service to do so. Similarly, the releases can be distributed by website owners or by professional distribution services. Costs are not prohibitive.
5. All webmasters should have at least one blog on which he or she promotes and links to his or her website. Nothing could be easier…all that’s required is a very brief article once a week on a topic related to the site owner’s website. For folks with absolutely no writing skills, there are services which will write blog posts for as little as $10.
6. Some webmasters have enjoyed great success obtaining links as a result of their Facebook listings and inviting their website visitors to include their site on social bookmarking sites. There are dozens of such sites to which you or your visitors can submit your site.
7. Guest blogging: offer articles to appropriate blogs if they allow you to include an author’s box with a link to your website.
8. Useful, relevant posts in guestbooks and on forums and blogs, with your URL in your signature, can produce many links with little effort. But, do not spam. Post only when you really have something of value to say.
There are other techniques you can try, but be careful about “black hat” tactics like buying links unless you are willing to risk being penalized by the search engines.
